Lima ranks as perhaps the world’s most overlooked destination — and expat lifestyle spot. Overshadowed by the famed city of Cuzco, gateway to Machu Picchu, Lima gets skipped too often. Yet those who go end up adoring its charms. They get rewarded by the hemisphere’s best cuisine. And they keep going back.

Peruvian hospitality should rank among the best in South America — at least for those living in the city. Having lived in 12 cities in the past two decades, Lima ranks among the top for having generous friends. Here’s looking at you Patrik, Charo, Luis, Omar, Harumi, and Marcio!

Most of Lima’s action takes place along the coast in southern Lima. Below are a few highlights.

EXPLORE

Miraflores Neighborhood: The colorful neighborhood along the cliffs, blessed by Pacific Ocean views. Morning fogs melts into afternoon sunshine. The neighborhood was immortalized in videos by Carlos Vives and Don Diablo.

Paragliding on Miraflores Coast: As delightful as it looks in the photo above. “Paraport” is located on the main drag along the top of the cliff in Miraflores. Recommended operators here.

Larco Museum: Exquisitely designed museum of Peruvian history and art, enjoyable even for non-museum lovers. Website here.
