Self-Reliance = Success

Work is evolving. No longer is it normal to gain income from just one company, showing up at some sterile office for 8–10 hours a day, and being subject to the whims of others — and their pet projects. Or literal pet stories. As much as we want to hear about Kathy’s cats…

To earn money in 2023, no longer does earning require putting up with self-serving bosses who treat their employees as machines. Rather, self-reliance is supplanting this default work mode.

While company hierarchies helped us produce goods in the reliant age, the emerging knowledge/gig economy gives us other opportunities in the self-reliant age. The Internet gives us micro-economic leverage to choose our jobs. We can message contacts on Whatsapp if they needed extra work support. We could turn on an Uber or GoJek app and instantly become a worker there. We could go on Fiverr, Upwork, or the new platform Farcaster to connect with freelance jobs. We could join an internet-based organization that pays members in cryptoassets (called a DAO, more on this later). We could start a Substack newsletter and all by myself, earn from content creation.

Why become self reliant?

First, we should ask ourselves what we don’t like about being employees. Being an employee means being reliant on a boss for sustenance.

  • Bosses want to keep us dependent…
